Onwards & Upwards for Jack Scott & Quex Park🚜
Time for an update on the progress of Jack Scott who you may recall is a young grower we have been helping get off the ground.
Jack is one of the few 'new' growers in Kent of mixed veg over the past few years, adding to the reducing headcount of veg growers in the county.
This year Jack has been growing on a few acres in Nonington and has been sending us great produce. The issues though for someone starting out are huge. To scale his business, as well as making some money, would mean taking on more land, buying equipment and sourcing a reliable supply of water. As Jack doesn't own his own land this is impossible to finance and is a block on his development.
Now for some good news!
Quex Park, which is an old estate in Thanet, used to grow a lot of veg on its land. This stopped when the supermarkets throttled smaller growers and the land was put to arable.
The good news is that the estate, under new ownership, is looking to restart Regenerative vegetable growing and Jack has been recruited as their lead grower! Indeed Jack (The tallest) as already started planting as you can see above!
This is fantastic news for Jack as the farm is fully equipped and has its own water supply. They are starting with about 10 acres and are already close to produce the Cavolo Nero pictured. They are looking at expanding that to 30 acres soon.
Crops planned include Brassicas, root veg and Alliums. 🥬🥕🧅
It is also great news for us as we need all the veg growers in Kent we can get!
We have already met with Jack and the Quex team and advised them on what to grow and what commitment we can make (on our customers behalf) to take their produce, underwriting the investment they are making in the farm.
This is a prime example of the work we are doing to support Kent farmers. Land back in veg production being supported by Kent Veg Box and it's customers' commitment.
