Cavolo Nero - The First Kale

So the first of the Kales are here and it's our favourite Cavolo Nero  🖤.

Grown by several of our farmers it is our preferred Kale until it disappears when the first frosts arrive, true to its Italian Heritage.

Have you ever heard of Cavolo Nero? It's not just any leafy green - it's the first kale! This ancient vegetable has been around for centuries, prized for its rich flavor and incredible health benefits. Let's dive into the world of Cavolo Nero and discover why it's a must-have in your diet.

What Makes Cavolo Nero Special?

Cavolo Nero, also known as Tuscan kale or dinosaur kale, stands out for its dark, bumpy leaves and robust taste. Unlike other types of kale, Cavolo Nero has a slightly sweeter and more delicate flavor profile, making it a favorite among chefs and home cooks alike. Its versatility in the kitchen is unmatched - you can sauté it, bake it into chips, or add it to soups and stews for an extra nutritional boost.

Health Benefits of Cavolo Nero

Not only is Cavolo Nero delicious, but it's also packed with essential nutrients that can benefit your health. This superfood is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like calcium and iron. Incorporating Cavolo Nero into your meals can help boost your immune system, improve bone health, and support overall well-being. Plus, its high fiber content makes it a great choice for digestion and weight management.

How to Enjoy Cavolo Nero

Ready to add Cavolo Nero to your diet?  When preparing Cavolo Nero, be sure to remove the tough stems and chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces. I'd suggest gripping the stalk from the base and stipping the leaves from top to bottom. The stalk normally breaks at weak point so not tough stems!

From there, the possibilities are endless - we love adding it to stews and casseroles to add colour, flavour and texture.  We have a bunch of recipes ideas on our Pinterest Page.

Whether you're a kale connoisseur or new to the world of leafy greens, Cavolo Nero is a must-try for anyone looking to elevate their culinary creations and nourish their body from the inside out. Embrace the ancient tradition of this powerhouse vegetable and experience the vibrant flavors and health benefits it has to offer. Your taste buds and your body will thank you!
